Limited edition watches are always an exciting proposition to scrutinise, but recently we came across an exclusive offering from Omega that was really something special. We’re used to seeing limited edition timepieces being made in tens, hundreds and even thousands in terms of individual examples, so this particular Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra is very notable indeed, as only a single example has been created. Designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic James Bond movie Goldfinger, Omega clearly rose to the occasion when they received the opportunity to celebrate this unique opportunity, producing something that is demonstrably one-of-a-kind.

When the movie in question is entitled Goldfinger, the prolific use of gold upon a related wristwatch is not so much required as it is necessitated, and Omega have certainly chosen to adopt that philosophy, as almost the entire timepiece has been crafted from warm 18 carat gold. Measuring at 38.5 mm, the case is completely formed from this material, as are the bezel, the hands, and the rotor, bridge and oscillating weight of the Master Co-Axial calibre 8501 movement. Despite having taken every opportunity to fashion this Aqua Terra from gold, all of the usual Omega attention to detail has also been maintained, so this watch lacks for nothing in the more normal sense either.

According to standard practice, the 18 carat yellow gold hands of this Seamaster have been coated in practical SuperLuminova, whilst a more unorthodox route has been adopted with regards to the counterweight of the second hand, which has been intricately fashioned to mimic the famous ‘007’ logo. An engraving around the transparent exhibition caseback conveys the connotations that this timepiece owes to Goldfinger, whilst it also displays the aptitude of the anti-magnetic Master Co-Axial movement housed within. Finished by the addition of a presentation box that is scarcely less unique than the watch itself (the design draws inspiration from no less a source than the Fort Knox U.S. Bullion Depositary), you have an Omega watch that is sure to go down in the annals of history.
Having already been sold during an online charity auction from Christie’s, and raising a staggering 106,000 CHF (70,000 GBP) by way of that sale (almost eight times the estimated value that had been attached to the watch in advance), it’s obviously nigh-on-impossible that any of us are going to get a closer encounter with this inimitable wristwatch, but it’s a very different story when you consider the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra range as a whole, as this prestigious collection is available right now at Banks Lyon Jewellers. We’ve featured this assemblage a lot in recent weeks, perhaps most notably by showcasing the Aqua Terra Golf (see above), yet we still have a vast array of other Aqua Terra watches which we’ve said precious little about, and, whilst they may not be solid gold, they’re certainly prestigious in their own right.
The Aqua Terra family serves as the base for some of Omega’s most formidable horological technology, yet it is superbly styled from an aesthetic point of view as well, so the watches are exceptionally well-rounded products that carry a substantial amount of heritage with them.
