When thinking of Bremont watches, the first association that most of us make is their connection to aviation and their range of watches designed specifically for pilots. Recently though, Bremont has been paying a little more homage to their association with the world of sailing by releasing four new ‘America’s Cup’ models.
Before we look at the models themselves, a little history on this incredible race and Bremont’s association with it;
The America’s Cup
Taking its name from the legendary schooner ‘America’ that began the race in 1851 the America’s Cup is by far the hardest trophy in sport. In more than 150 years only four nations have defeated America for the cup.
Originally the races involved wooden hulled boats with cloth sails, now though they are technological masterpieces. Multi-hulled, carbon fibre constructed vessels that are digitally shaped in order to pass through the waves as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Bremont have for several years, been closely associated with Oracle Team USA (defending America’s Cup winners) and their involvement has recently increased as they were announced as official timing partners for the race.
Bremont Timing Partners
In racing, split seconds make all the difference so any timing partner must be able to reliably deliver precise timing. Thankfully ‘precise’ and ‘reliable’ are the sorts of words that are already very closely associated with Bremont.
This partnership means that throughout the race, Bremont will always be on hand to provide timing for each team and the event as a whole.
New Models
As is natural with any major partnership, it has prompted Bremont to create not one, but four new models. Two of these models, the AC I and AC II are elegantly designed and aimed squarely at ‘on-shore’ use, whereas the Oracle I and II focus on robustness and are made to work in the harshest conditions that the ocean has to offer.
AC1 and AC2
The AC1 takes its architecture from the Bremont Solo range so features a 43mm case and leather strap. Each case contains the Bremont BE-50AE movement which ensures that precision is always the name of the game! The relatively compact size of this watch gives both of these watches an incredibly elegant look and highlights that these watches are made to commemorate the history of the America’s Cup.
Whilst the AC1 features a steel case, the AC2 takes it one step further with a beautiful gold case that looks absolutely resplendent. The dials on both watches are adorned with a beautifully decorative pattern that replicates the shape of the ‘auld mug’ which is the prize for the America’s Cup winner.
Oracle I and Oracle II
As you can see from the pictures the Oracle I and II are squarely focussed on the crew members aboard the Oracle Team USA’s vessel. Based on the Bremont Supermarine, both feature a C.O.S.C movement and are water resistant to 500 metres.
The Oracle I features an anti shock movement and an antimagnetic faraday cage to protect the movement. These features couple with a rugged rubber strap to ensure that this watch is very squarely the workhorse of the bunch, as at home on the water as it is in the water.
Similar to the Oracle I the Oracle II is built to be rugged which is hinted at by the Kevlar style strap but also adds a 24H GMT hand. The black dial of the Oracle II provides a perfect contrast against the white hands which allows for better legibility in low light conditions.
Whichever is your favourite, there is no debating that Bremont has done an incredible job with each and every one of them.
