Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7
Like many pieces in Longines’ Heritage collection, this timepiece is inspired by an earlier model from the 1930s; a watch designed for the US military, combining the duties of aviation and navigation as “avigation”. The uniquely skewed dial is designed to allow the wearer to wear the dial on the inside of their wrist and accurately consult their watch without moving their hands from the controls – a feature which is just as useful on the motorway as it is in the air. Breitling Avenger Blackbird 44mm
With a name that sounds like it may have come straight from a superhero movie, this is a sturdy and imposing timepiece. Indeed, the original 48mm case is, for some, rather too imposing, which is why the Swiss watchmakers introduced the more manageable 44mm version this year. Even in its trimmed down version, this is an unashamedly bold piece, with a satin-finished titanium case, matte black dial and sturdy military-style nylon strap all in black, highlighted only by the luminous hands and markers and subtle red accents. Omega Darkside of the Moon “Black Black” watch
It would hardly be possible to choose five black watches without including Omega’s striking Darkside of the Moon “Black Black” watch. Unlike the other timepieces we have chosen, this watch is designed entirely in black; not merely the ceramic case and dial, but also the hands, indexes and strap. Despite this, it offers excellent readability and functionality, with the hands and indexes applied in black superluminova to ensure accessibility even (or indeed, especially) in low light conditions.
