5 of the Best: Black Watches for Men

Black Watches

We may constantly hear style gurus informing us that one colour after another is “the new black” but the fact remains – black is a style constant. Whilst the ladies may rejoice in their little black dresses, the black watch is a stylish companion for any gentleman.

Here we have selected just five of the exceptional black watches from our range to showcase the versatility of the black watch.

Raymond Weil Freelancer Urban Black Watch

Raymond Weil Freelancer Urban BlackIntroduced in 2012, this is an eye-catching chronograph which is ideal for daily wear or as an entry-level piece, priced at £2,350 and available on 0% finance. The black face and strap are complemented by the luminescent Arabic numerals and the striking garnet red of the accents and chronograph hands. The 42mm case is coated in matt black PVD, giving it additional scratch resistance and making it pleasingly soft to wear. Internally, it uses a Raymond Weil Caliber 5000 movement, which you can see through the sapphire exhibition caseback.

TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 6 Watch

TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 6The TAG Heuer Monaco line was, of course, made famous by actor Steve McQueen when he chose to wear one in his 1971 film Le Mans. This understated automatic watch is ideal for those who love the iconic style of the square face, but are looking for something a little more discreet. With an automatic calibre offering about 38 to 44 hours power reserve and a clean, elegant face, this is a very refined timepiece with a timeless appeal. The TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 6 watch retails at £2,450 and is, again, available on generous 0% finance terms.

Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7

Longines Avigation Watch Type A7Like many pieces in Longines’ Heritage collection, this timepiece is inspired by an earlier model from the 1930s; a watch designed for the US military, combining the duties of aviation and navigation as “avigation”. The uniquely skewed dial is designed to allow the wearer to wear the dial on the inside of their wrist and accurately consult their watch without moving their hands from the controls – a feature which is just as useful on the motorway as it is in the air. It features a column-wheel chronograph movement with 54 hours’ power reserve, and a single-button action for ease of use. The Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7 retails at £3,090, with our 0% finance terms available.

Breitling Avenger Blackbird 44mm

Breitling Avenger BlackbirdWith a name that sounds like it may have come straight from a superhero movie, this is a sturdy and imposing timepiece. Indeed, the original 48mm case is, for some, rather too imposing, which is why the Swiss watchmakers introduced the more manageable 44mm version this year. Even in its trimmed down version, this is an unashamedly bold piece, with a satin-finished titanium case, matte black dial and sturdy military-style nylon strap all in black, highlighted only by the luminous hands and markers and subtle red accents. The Breitling 17 caliber offers reliable functionality, with a minimum of 40 hours power reserve. This chronometer-certified piece retails at £3,710.00. Or if you prefer, there’s the Breitling Avenger Chronograph 44 Night Mission.

Omega Darkside of the Moon “Black Black” watch

Omega Darkside of the Moon Black BlackIt would hardly be possible to choose five black watches without including Omega’s striking Darkside of the Moon “Black Black” watch. Unlike the other timepieces we have chosen, this watch is designed entirely in black; not merely the ceramic case and dial, but also the hands, indexes and strap. Despite this, it offers excellent readability and functionality, with the hands and indexes applied in black superluminova to ensure accessibility even (or indeed, especially) in low light conditions. As a variant of the OMEGA Speedmaster, it features the Omega co-axial 9300 caliber and is chronometer-rated, making it not only an extraordinary looking timepiece but a powerful one to boot. This timepiece retails at £8,205.00.
